The long-game restoration plan for this project is to restore the natural processes that support salmon and trout habitat by continued stewardship of the floodplain forest. This project has been 7 years in the making and there is still so much more work to be done to raise the young floodplain forest to an age where the trees will be big enough to fully restore South Prairie Creek to a system sustained by natural floodplain processes. Chinook have already been spotted spawning and juvenile steelhead feeding in and around the newly constructed log jams on the South Prairie Creek soon after construction. The Pierce Conservation District will be investing decades into restoring the floodplain forest with local crews, nursery suppliers, and volunteers from the community. Project construction lasted 7 months and was a team effort with local contractor as the lead with help from other local sub-contractors and suppliers. This project was made possible because of the dedicated work of many, including employees from over 35 tribal governments, public agencies, non-governmental organizations, and private businesses. This project required strong partnerships to take on this multi-year design venture, ambitious construction schedule, and landscape-scale planting effort to bring this project into being. UFISH SOUTH PRAIRIE FREE
Bags and ice for taking your fish home fresh are provided free of charge. You are welcome to bring your own favorite pole, or rent one for just $1 per visit. Group packages include fishing, fish cleaning, pole rentals and bait.
Special discounts are available for groups. Bill's Fishin Hole is an ideal place to bring a group for events including birthday parties, youth group outings and family gatherings. Below the awning are a number of picnic tables and a snack bar. For those up for the big challenge, the two smaller fishing ponds are stocked with trophy-size Rainbow trout, measuring 3 lbs or more! The main fishing pond, stocked with hundreds of 10-14 inch rainbow trout, has a large permanent awning covering one side, so fishing can happen come rain or shine.
UFISH SOUTH PRAIRIE SERIES
There are three large fishing ponds and a series of hatchery raceways. The facility is open year-round, usually 7 days a week. They are located between Orting and South Prairie, just off Hwy 162. Bill's Fishin Hole is a family-friendly facility designed to give kids and adults the opportunity to catch Rainbow Trout.
